The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), an organization that has been a cornerstone of American youth development for over a century, has faced a profound crisis in recent years. The organization has been embroiled in a massive lawsuit stemming from allegations of widespread sexual abuse by scout leaders and volunteers. These allegations have not only tarnished the organization's reputation but have also led to a legal and financial reckoning.
Thousands of former scouts came forward, revealing that they had been molested or sexually assaulted by scout leaders or volunteers during their time in the BSA. These revelations sparked a public outcry and led to the formation of a legal coalition representing the victims.
The scope of the allegations was vast, encompassing incidents from as far back as the 1940s to the present day. The claims highlighted a pervasive pattern of abuse and a systemic failure by the BSA to protect its members. In many cases, the organization allegedly failed to report known abusers to law enforcement or to implement effective safeguarding measures.
As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, the Boy Scouts of America established a compensation trust to provide financial settlements to survivors. This trust was funded by contributions from the BSA, local councils, and insurance companies. The aim was to offer victims a measure of justice and closure.
The deadline for submitting Matrix Claims Questionnaires to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Trust was initially set for May 31, 2024, at 11:59 pm EDT. However, following numerous requests and explanations from both Claimants and attorneys, the Trust has decided to extend the deadline. Claimants now have until July 26, 2024, at 6 pm EDT to submit their Matrix Claims Questionnaires without needing to provide reasons for missing the original deadline or request permission.
After July 26, 2024, Claimants will need to meet a stringent standard of "extraordinary circumstances beyond the Claimant’s control" to submit a Matrix Claims Questionnaire. This is known as the "Late Claim Permission and Proof Process." Without meeting these criteria, claims will not be considered for allowance by the Trust.
For Claimants, whether represented by an attorney or acting pro se, the next few weeks are crucial. You must ensure your Matrix Claims Questionnaire is completed, signed, and submitted by the new deadline. If you fail to do so, your claim will not be considered. If you submitted a claim for an e-signature using the Trust’s Adobe Sign account but it was not fully signed by the original deadline, the Adobe Sign has been canceled, and your claim status reverted. You will need to resubmit the questionnaire for signature.
As of the latest update, the status of the claims is as follows:
If you have not started this process, it is not too late. The extended deadline provides an additional opportunity to seek justice.
