Douglas County Car Crash

A recent and devastating car accident in Douglas County has led to significant loss and heartbreak, shedding light on the severe consequences of impaired driving. Authorities allege that Rachel Bickerstaff, 33, was driving under the influence of alcohol at speeds exceeding 100 mph when her vehicle collided with another car, resulting in the deaths of her own young children and a man returning home from work.

The Fatal Crash and Its Victims

The accident occurred just after 1:30 a.m. on September 27 in downtown Omaha, when Bickerstaff's vehicle, traveling between 105-116 mph, crashed into 70-year-old Michael Sales’ Subaru. Sales, a FedEx employee on his way home from his part-time job, was killed instantly. Bickerstaff’s vehicle became engulfed in flames, tragically killing her 11-day-old and 5-year-old daughters on the spot. Her 18-month-old child, who suffered severe burn injuries, succumbed to these injuries days later in a burn unit in Kansas City.

Court records indicate that Bickerstaff’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.216—nearly three times the legal limit. Her passenger, also the father of the three deceased girls, survived but sustained injuries.

Background of the Driver

The driver, Rachel Bickerstaff, has a history of impaired driving. She faced a previous DUI conviction in early 2020 and was charged with misdemeanor DUI and reckless driving, resulting in a license suspension, a probation period, and required use of an interlock device. Bickerstaff also has a history of drug use and had previously relinquished custody of four other children, citing concerns about their well-being.

What to Do After a Car Accident

For those involved in a car accident, it’s essential to follow certain steps to ensure safety and proper documentation:

  1. Check for Injuries: Immediately check yourself and others involved for injuries and call for medical assistance if necessary.

  2. Move to Safety: If possible, move vehicles out of traffic to avoid further danger.

  3. Call 911: Report the accident to the police, even if it seems minor, as their documentation can be essential for any future legal actions.

  4. Document the Scene: Take photos and videos of the scene, vehicle positions, and any visible damage. Record witness statements if possible.

  5. Exchange Information: Exchange contact and insurance information with other parties involved.

  6. Seek Medical Attention: Injuries from car accidents might not be immediately noticeable; consult a medical professional to ensure there are no hidden injuries.

  7. Contact Legal Assistance: Especially in cases of severe injury or fatality, contacting a legal professional can help ensure proper handling of insurance claims and legal proceedings.

Signs of Brain Damage After a Car Accident

Car accidents often lead to serious injuries, with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) being among the most severe. These injuries occur when the brain experiences rapid movement within the skull, often as a result of sudden stops or impacts, like those in a crash. Such movement can cause the brain to collide against the inside of the skull, leading to bruising, tearing of blood vessels, and damage to brain tissue.
